In the new virtual webinar series "OPC UA" you can learn more about the approaches and contents of the already published or currently being developed OPC UA Companion Specifications of the mechanical and plant engineering industry - flexibly and conveniently in your home office. Experts from various industries such as robotics, machine tools or plastics and rubber machines will present their work in 60-minute sessions.
In the webinar "Retrofit for Industrie 4.0", around 90 participants were able to experience approaches and implementation examples that showed how existing machines and systems can be modernized to make them suitable for Industry 4.0. Presentations from Hans Turck GmbH & Co. KG, viastore SYSTEMS GmbH and Fraunhofer IOSB-INA provided insights into digital retrofitting.
The third call for proposals of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy is intended to support projects based on digital technologies in the fields of prevention and management of infectious and other threatening crisis situations. These projects should be suitable for strengthening the resilience of the economy and protecting the health of the population.
The working group "Research I40 and AI" is currently planning a new cross-industry research project on the topic of "Trust in AI in Production". Other interested VDMA members are welcome to participate in the project and in the working group.
With the joint project "Building 4.0", 30 project partners from industry, associations and research institutes have set themselves the goal of researching and developing innovative, powerful and flexible machine and communication technologies. The aim is to support small and medium-sized industry in particular in implementing Industrie 4.0 on the construction site. The VDMA is one of the transfer partners.
In the joint pre-competitive research project "Intelligent and self-learning production processes (InPulS)", VDMA members and scientists have investigated how machines and plants can teach themselves the optimum processes with little data, independently and by interacting with the environment. The machine learning method "Reinforcement Learning" was used for this purpose and examined and tested in two application scenarios.

Exclusive publication of the guide "5G in mechanical and plant engineering - Guide for the integration of 5G in product and production" for VDMA members
The webinar "Virtual Commissioning" on 24.04.2020 gave impressive insights into the practical approaches. More than 290 listeners were able to follow the presentations of BMW, KUKA and HAHN AUTOMATION live and ask questions.
In the future, VDMA and VDW will jointly promote the use and dissemination of OPC UA standards for the entire mechanical engineering industry under the umati brand.
About 30 VDMA members met at the VDMA in Frankfurt on January 16, 2020, to launch new project ideas for joint research projects in the field of Industrie 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence.
In the new episode of the OPC Foundation Podcast Andreas Faath explains the role of the VDMA in the development of OPC UA Companion Specifications. The head of OPC UA in VDMA gives an overview of the active working groups in VDMA and explains the process underlying the development of a Companion Specification.
Around 20 VDMA members visited the Cybernetics Lab in Aachen in February 2020 to see examples of research on Industrie 4.0 and artificial intelligence.
Virtual commissioning is becoming increasingly important across all industries. Against this background, the VDMA guideline "Virtual commissioning" is currently being developed. It will be published in autumn 2020.
Together with a project advisory board consisting of VDMA members, the VDMA is currently working on the guideline "Retrofit for Industrie 4.0: new benefits with existing machines". Release date is autumn this year.
Around 50 VDMA members visited Lenze SE in Hameln on 16 January. The highlight of the experience exchange event was the company's Plug & Produce Showcase, which illustrates the advantages of OPC UA in a very concrete way.

The guideline "Value Generation from Machine Data 4.0" supports small and medium-sized mechanical engineering companies in the profitable self-exploitation of machine data. The focus is on the entire value chain, because: Only together can machine operators, machine manufacturers and automation producers realize the maximum benefit from machine data.

The results of the Enquete Commission "AI and Economy" are generally well received by the VDMA, as KI is clearly named as a key technology for the economy. However, from the VDMA's point of view, increased coordination between science, industry and civil society is absolutely necessary in this important area.

OPC UA Companion Specifications –an important prerequisite on the way to Industrie 4.0
The definition of uniform interfaces in production is a prerequisite on the way to Industrie 4.0. The VDMA is currently focusing on the interface standard OPC UA and is developing industry-specific OPC UA Companion Specifications. An OPC UA Companion Specification is an information model suitable for all manufacturers which represents the real interfaces between components, machines and systems.
