Around 20 VDMA members visited the Cybernetics Lab in Aachen in February 2020 to see examples of research on Industrie 4.0 and artificial intelligence.
Virtual commissioning is becoming increasingly important across all industries. Against this background, the VDMA guideline "Virtual commissioning" is currently being developed. It will be published in autumn 2020.
About 30 VDMA members met at the VDMA in Frankfurt on January 16, 2020, to launch new project ideas for joint research projects in the field of Industrie 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence.
Together with a project advisory board consisting of VDMA members, the VDMA is currently working on the guideline "Retrofit for Industrie 4.0: new benefits with existing machines". Release date is autumn this year.
Around 50 VDMA members visited Lenze SE in Hameln on 16 January. The highlight of the experience exchange event was the company's Plug & Produce Showcase, which illustrates the advantages of OPC UA in a very concrete way.

The guideline "Value Generation from Machine Data 4.0" supports small and medium-sized mechanical engineering companies in the profitable self-exploitation of machine data. The focus is on the entire value chain, because: Only together can machine operators, machine manufacturers and automation producers realize the maximum benefit from machine data.

The VDMA coordinates the activities of more than 26 working groups, which define a common, cross-sector language between machines and plants in the form of "OPC UA Companion Specifications".
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funds R&D projects in the "Innovations for Tomorrow's Production, Services and Work" research programme that demonstrably improve manufacturing technology processes by using AI technologies in and on machines and production resources.
The BMBF is funding projects on the topic "The future of work: SMEs - innovative and social" as part of the research programme "Innovations for tomorrow's production, services and work".
The compilation “Industrie 4.0 Research at German Research Institutes – Overview” provides VDMA members with an overview of the work of German research institutes in the Industrie 4.0 environment.

At the meeting of the VDMA working group "I40 and AI" on March 12, 2020, representatives of VDMA and member companies will intensively discuss the project idea "Uncertainty estimation in neural networks" as a successor of the project InPulS. OPC UA Companion Specifications –an important prerequisite on the way to Industrie 4.0
The definition of uniform interfaces in production is a prerequisite on the way to Industrie 4.0. The VDMA is currently focusing on the interface standard OPC UA and is developing industry-specific OPC UA Companion Specifications. An OPC UA Companion Specification is an information model suitable for all manufacturers which represents the real interfaces between components, machines and systems.
